An Education in an Online Degree Program and Online Careers

Today it is possible for many people to get their degree as well as earn a living on the World Wide Web!  It's amazing what can be done with today's technology.  Even those with little internet savvy can start earning some income in only a short time.

What Kind of Online Work is There?

If you get through your online degree program and decide you'd also like to work from home there are plenty of Online and Work at Home Jobs too.  It's certainly possible to get a good job working from home with a good company.  For instance; companies like 1-800-Flowers hire Virtual Customer Service Representatives all the time.  Just keep these careers in mind when looking for that online degree:

  • Bookkeeper
  • Virtual Tutor/Teacher
  • Accountant
  • Proofreader
  • Copywriter
  • Translator
  • Illustrator
  • Telemarketer
  • Web Developer
  • Customer Service Representative
  • Webmaster
  • Virtual Assistant
  • Programmer
  • Medical Transcriptionist

Internet workers can work in two broad categories: remote workers and freelance workers. Remote workers are those who work for one regular employer who either has limited office space or just doesn't want everybody at work at the same time. Freelance workers or contract workers are workers who may work creatively and sell their work on the internet. Others work on very specific work that is completed to exacting pre-established parameters. This is often called contract employment rather than freelance work.

The main difference among these is that the latter group of these is responsible for their own income tax payments and record keeping. Remote workers additionally are able to enjoy a good many perks and benefits. They all look alike when sitting in their home office wearing PJ's. The remote worker has often the better insurance program though. Yet it is unlikely that his income will suddenly break the mega-income point as his creative freelance counterpart may do.

Finding Work Online!

The job search for online or remote work is much the same as it is for other kinds of work.  Before you graduate we suggest that you start researching companies in your chosen field that hire remote workers.  If you are planning on being something like a Chef or an Accountant you'll want to focus more on working for yourself.  This is a great chance for you to develop your own business.

If you are looking to get a job with a regular company in your area, check out the job listing boards such as:

Dice Filled with Tech Industry Related Jobs

It will help you to search for jobs using keyword terms like; work at home, freelance or remote worker in order to find those employers offering such jobs.

Many of these job sites also let you post your resume.  Make sure you do so and specify in it that you are looking to be a remote worker for a good company.  If you are considering work on site with a company as well and don't want to limit your options such sites also allow you to post more than one resume geared towards different careers and work at home or on the job areas.

Working for yourself or building up your own small business will be a little more involved.  You may find that your business builds slowly one client at a time.  As such it's a good idea to start gearing towards this while still in school.

Marketing Yourself for Online Work

A website is a good idea for anyone looking to find online work.  This allows for clients and companies seeking people like you to find you online 24 hours a day.  Plus, you can show off your tech and programming skills if you are planning on working in this area.

A simple web-page advertising yourself and posting your resume can be created by signing up for a blog on either;

You can use these sites to create a simple web-page with regular posts that prospective employers and clients can find you on.

In addition, you can sign up for profiles and memberships at service directory sites like;

These sites offer a place where clients and freelancers can get together to work on projects.  Often the client posts their project and how much they are willing to pay on the board for free, while the freelancers pay for a membership or number of bids they can make per month.  The freelances then look through projects for those fitting their skill levels and post bids stating how much they charge, how soon they'll complete the work and what experience they have to offer.

It's also a good idea to create some samples for potential clients to look over when you make a bid, to post on your website or to submit with your resumes.  This will show the experience and skill set you have to those new potential clients or bosses.

Of course, if you are just graduating from high school or looking to expand your skill set you'll want to get a degree in the area you want to specialize in.  You may find that you want to look at long distance learning opportunities for getting an education.  There are many reasons for this step, but you'll find that it's quite easy to get an online degree these days.

The first thing that needs to be looked at, are the number of universities and colleges that offer diplomas through the internet or long distance programs.  These are real accredited institutions that have taken the time to compile and offer some if not all of their classes in a distance learning degree program.

Online classes are more difficult than in person classes because you have to make yourself set aside time to work, and you work alone.  You will have access to the teacher in email, mail, phone and forums but it won't be quite the same.  Before you start a distance learning program make sure you are a self-starter.  Or start easy on yourself with just a couple of classes at a time.
